How to Prepare for Your Visit to the Veterinary Clinic

Depending on the type of appointment you and your pet have at our veterinary clinic, there are various preparations you should make. Booking: Each visit to our clinic is scheduled for a specific time. If your pet is highly stressed during visits, please mention this at the time of booking and ask for advice on potential pharmacological sedation, especially if blood tests or other diagnostic procedures may be required. Arrival: If this is your pet’s first visit to our clinic, please arrive 10 minutes early to register your pet’s records. Documents: Bring your pet’s passport and/or health book, treatment history (if available), and previous test results. Fasting: Your pet should be fasted for at least 8 hours (without food but can drink water) to facilitate blood sampling. Interview: We will ask about your pet’s diet (type and amount of food), fluid intake, urination and defecation habits, any occurrences of vomiting, and the latest heat cycle. If someone other than the owner accompanies you, they should be familiar with the answers to these questions.

Preparations for General Anesthesia

The following steps apply to both patients undergoing surgical procedures and those requiring premedication for further tests such as X-rays: Fasting: Fast for at least 8 hours before the visit unless our veterinarians provide different instructions. Water: Withhold water for at least 2 hours before the appointment. General Condition: Ensure your pet is in good general health (without symptoms like coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, vomiting, or fever). Heat Cycle: Female dogs and cats should not be in heat during the preparation period.

Preparations for Blood Tests

For blood tests, your pet should be fasted for at least 8 hours before the scheduled appointment at the veterinary clinic.

Preparations for Abdominal Ultrasound (USG)

Fasting: Your pet should be fasted for about 10-12 hours before the examination (especially if the gastrointestinal tract or adrenal glands are to be assessed). Water: Your pet can drink water as usual, but ensure they are walked before the visit.

Preparations for X-rays

General Preparations: No special preparation is needed for standard X-rays. However, it’s important that the owner assisting with the examination can hold the pet and does not have any contraindications (e.g., pregnancy, ongoing X-ray therapy). Premedication: Sometimes, premedication may be necessary to obtain useful images due to pain, unusual positions, or the pet’s temperament. In such cases, the rules for anesthesia/premedication (see above) apply. Preparations for Endoscopy

General Preparations: For endoscopy, bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy, and gastroscopy, the following applies: Fast for 12 hours without food and at least 2 hours without water. For bronchoscopy, we also recommend a cardiological examination (echocardiogram) and X-rays of the chest.
